Nature trail
Visit Paignton Zoo’s Nature Trail, a short walk through part of the extensive Clennon Gorge Nature Reserve.

Clennon Gorge is a wooded valley of 60 acres and was designated as a County Wildlife Site by Devon Wildlife Trust due to its areas of limestone grassland and ancient woodland.
The woodland has existed on this site for many hundreds of years and has developed a rich community of plants and animals. The reserve is a vital green space in Torbayâs urban landscape.
Humans have left their mark on the reserve in the form of limestone quarrying and although this ceased around 150 years ago, the quarries and kilns remain. Firewood harvested from the woodland in the form of coppicing was used to fuel the lime kilns that converted the limestone into lime.
Today we still coppice but at a smaller scale. Coppicing is cutting down of trees and allowing them to regenerate and then cut again 7-10 years later in a continuous cycle. This sounds destructive but it actually improves the biodiversity of the Nature Trail.

The pond and stream add important water habitats to the Nature Trail. The pond is often used as an educational resource where pond dipping takes place giving students the chance to see what little lives exist under the surface.
Next time you visit the zoo take 10-15 minutes to explore and enjoy the peace and quiet of this wooded valley walk.
